First produced in 1966, the Cougar soon proved to be a rousing success. However, sales started to drop in the early seventies and Mercurys response was to replace muscle with fluff by adding tonnage and packing to the high-profit options. It worked, but only for a short period and Mercury never regained the muscle car image. Models covered: Cougar, XR-7, GT, GT-E, Eliminator, Hard top, convertible, 289, 390, 427, 428 Cobra Jet, Boss 302, 351 & 429.
